This can be exemplified in the following basic example. Imagine you are carrying a tray of wine to the patio and on your way, someone says “Be careful, don’t spill them!” Even though this may seem to be a friendly reminder, what you don’t know is that it has set in motion an increase in likelihood that you will actually spill the wine. This is because your subconscious mind and conscious mind cannot tell the different between the two.
Here is another example. Sit comfortably or lie down, whichever is more comfortable for you. Now, do NOT focus on your breath for 15 seconds. Now, take a 15 second break and come back when you’re done. I’m gonna take a wild guess here and say that you thought about your breath for the whole 15 seconds. This is a basic example of how the unconscious mind cannot discern what a negation is.
