How Does Covert Hypnosis Really Work Anyway?

Most people don’t understand hypnosis. Even fewer understand the concept of doing it covertly, through a seemingly ordinary conversation. So let’s talk a bit about what hypnosis is, and what it is not.

Hypnosis is not about falling under someone’s spell and following every command they give to you. When you see this in the movies, it is fake. When you see it on stage, you need to realize that the subjects wanted to be part of a comedy show. They may truly be hypnotized, and quite deeply hypnotized. But they came up on stage intending to go deeply into hypnosis. It’s no wonder they follow ridiculous suggestions on stage. Covert hypnosis is not like this.

And what really is hypnosis? Well, it is a state of consciousness where a person is very focused on a single idea. You listen and react more to suggestions and proposals when you are in a hypnotic state.

Most certainly you have been in a hypnotic trance hundreds of times during your life. You may just not have any clue that it was happening. Do you remember taking a long journey in the car? You know how you just “zone out” while driving and your unconscious mind drives automatically? Or how about how your body tenses up during a scary part of a movie. All of those reactions are forms of hypnosis.

So how does one apply hypnotic trance in regular conversations? First off, you have to build trust with your listener. After this, get the listener to intently listen to a single topic by telling a story. This can be done by a mastery of the language and you can observe the reaction of your listener while you try to coerce him into a trance state.

A easy way to attain this state is by telling a really engaging story. By doing this, you’ll capture the imagination of your listener and he will be focused in on one idea. You’ll be able to guide his focus. This is how you create trance. Once trance is created, you can offer suggestions.

However, deep trance is not the usual effect of covert hypnosis. It usually results in only a light trance. But this is all you need. Most people might not even recognize the trance. A good hypnotist will certainly recognize the signs, though.

If you want to go to a deep trance, this is usually achieved through therapeutic hypnosis. The reason is that the subject wants to be hypnotized. He also wants to solve an issue and that is the reason why he is willing to go into this deep state of hypnosis.

Covert hypnosis can be incredibly useful as a way to influence someone to do something. It can help push someone over the edge if they are hesitating to make a purchase. You can help someone stop procrastinating. You can use it to make someone else associate good feelings towards you. You can use it to build trust. It’s truly endless.

So how do you actually learn the skill? You could start with books, but you would have a hard time mastering the skill with only books. You could study at home with audio courses such as those from Igor Ledochowski or Steven Peliari. Those are good options. Finally, you can go train with someone in person – this is the most expensive option but can give you the best results.
